Comments:

Following graduation from George Washington University and Harvard Law School, I entered the Foreign Service of the Department of State to begin a diplomatic career.

My overseas postings, primarily as a political officer, included Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Egypt, Hungary (twice - before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall), Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. Among many assignments back home in Washington, I spent two years serving as a Special Assistant to Secretaries of State Cyrus Vance, Edmund Muskie, and Al Haig. I also served as a senior political adviser to Ambassador Dick Holbrooke in Washington to garner support for inter-communal institutions in Bosnia-Herzegovina and was voted President of my Senior Seminar class, the most advanced executive-level training course at the time.

In October of 2002, Secretary of State Colin Powell swore me in as the U.S. Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman.

Following the completion of my tour in Muscat, I established a Rule of Law Office within the U.S. Embassy in Kabul before returning to Oman as a private citizen.

In 2008, I helped launch the newly established SASLO Legal Training Center in Muscat as its first Principal while also serving in senior positions in the Said al Shahry Law Office.

As of June, 2011, I took on the role of an adviser to the Board of Directors of a state-sponsored agency that plans, develops, and invests in tourist-related infrastructure projects in Oman.

Just before taking up the new position I hiked the Hadrian Wall path that was built by the Romans to demarcate what they considered the northern end of civilization. Starting in Newcastle in the east, the trail runs across all of England to Bowness on Solway on the eastern coast, more than 95 miles in total.

My wife, Eszter, teaches at the Sultan Qaboos University. Our oldest daughter is working on her Doctorate at SUNY/Buffalo, second oldest graduated from Princeton and is working for a financial firm in Budapest, third is a senior at UCLA and fourth will begin high school in Muscat next year.

My father, the late Judge Richard Baltimore spend the last eight years of his life with us overseas before passing away just short of his 99th birthday.

Before celebrating 2023 Thanksgiving with a daughter in Budapest, I spent a week engaged in humanitarian work in the Ukraine, from Munkachevo in the west to Siversk in the east, a few miles from the front. (Siversk, once a town of 11,000 is now inhabited by around 200 townspeople who refused to evacuate when their town was obliterated by rockets and now rely on NGOs for support.) We distributed more than five tons of supplies throughout the country, including heaters for a center for handicapped children.
