Before celebrating 2023 Thanksgiving with a daughter in Budapest, I spent a week engaged in humanitarian work in the Ukraine, from Munkachevo in the west to Siversk in the east, a few miles from the front. (Siversk, once a town of 11,000 is now inhabited by around 200 townspeople who refused to evacuate when their town was obliterated by rockets and now rely on NGOs for support.) We distributed more than five tons of supplies throughout the country, including heaters for a center for handicapped children.
Following graduation from George Washington University and Harvard Law School, I entered the Foreign Service of the Department of State to begin a diplomatic career that included Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Egypt, Hungary , Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. In DC, I was as a Special Assistant to Secretaries of State Cyrus Vance, Edmund Muskie, and Al Haig and later served as a senior political adviser to Ambassador Dick Holbrooke focussing on Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In October of 2002, Secretary of State Colin Powell swore me in as the U.S. Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman. Following the completion of my tour in Muscat, I established a Rule of Law Office within the U.S. Embassy in Kabul before returning to Oman as a private citizen.
My wife, Eszter, teaches at the Sultan Qaboos University. Our oldest daughter received her Doctorate at SUNY/Buffalo and now works at the Boston Medical Center, our second oldest graduated from Princeton and is working for a financial firm in Budapest, our third graduated from UCLA, got a Masters in Nonprofit leadership from Columbia and is working for Doctors Without Borders in NY.
Our youngest is in high school in Muscat.
Don, Happy Birthday from Oman. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the class.
Richard

To the right of me are Vanessza (who will start high school in August) Josephine (Princeton 19, working in Budapest), my wife Eszter, Natalie, and Krisztina (working on her doctorate in Buffalo)
Many happy returns of the day Dave. Hope your medical practice continues to flourish.

Happy Birthday Carol. I know I’ve said this before but your photo always reminds me of your lovely and gracious mother, who I remember so well. Take care. Ricky
